THE GIBRALTAR STRAIT SWIMMING ASSOCIATION

The Association is engaged to carry out all the bureaucratic procedures for the Spanish and Moroccan Maritime Administrations, as well as to arrange, by means of payment of the corresponding expenses, the human and material means legally demanded for the development of the event. At the end of this, The Association will facilitate the necessary documentation that certifies the achievement of the objectives and will proceed to include the swimmer in the official list of those swimmers who have crosses the Gibraltar Strait in its different categories.

Any information about the Association will be facilitated to those people who wish to have it through a letter to the President of the Association at the address specified at the end of these regulations.

PILOTS AND BOATS:

The pilots in charge of Gibraltar Strait crossing are well-known to the Association and have well-recognized prestige in the locality. The successful events of the last few years testify to this, and even they become committed to the event during the time that the swimmers stay in the zone, feeling very much a part of the final succes. During the crossing, the pilot will not alone take care of the boat control but will check the correct course of the crossing. The direct care of swimmer is the resposability of the pilot or his crew, cancelling the crossing if he determines that a risk for the swimmer and/or the persons on board exists. The boats should serve, also, as reference to the swimmer to keep an appropriate course by which, the swimmer, must keep a sharp look out to the indications and the boat positions. In fact, if it is observed that the swimmer does not follow these suggestions or that his/her strokes are irregular, we may suppose that he/she is suffering from hypothermia.

Escorting will be carried out by means of two boats contracted by the Association. One of these will be provided with all technical equipment of location and communications which are demanded by the Spanish Maritime Authorities, as well as a complete first-aid kit and with sufficient space to transport groups of persons, who might follow the crossing at any moment, together with their materials. The other boat will be an inflatable small craft that will be very close to the swimmer at all time, carrying on board the trainer or coach of the swimmer.

The pilot and the Association are engaged to transact all the documents referring to both the swimmer and the boats. To enable the Association to carry this out effciently, the swimmer must fill in the attached form, before his/her arrival to Spain. The form will be sent by mail to the Gibraltar Strait Swimming Association to the attached adress.

OTHER SPORTING EVENTS ON THE STRAIT:

The Gibraltar Strait, because of its special characteristics, is a suitable place for other types of events, apart from the swimming competition. In fact, there have already been organized canoe crossings, swimming in groups, diving with bottles and diver fins. The participation and organization of any other form of crossing that the Association may consider viable is open, as long as it counts on the consent of the Spanish Maritime Authorities. With that in mind, the Association is ready to study all the proposals from any organization and/or private person, as long as they are made in advance and with enough information.

The Association also puts at the disposal of the swimmer who wishes, the possibility of accomplishing one or several previous training sessions before the official crossing. Such training is for a determined number of hours, to simulate a real crossing and must start from Tarifa Island, taking place in Spanish territorial waters. If a swimmer is interested in such training he/she must notify it specifically to the Association and pay the corresponding surcharge on the total espenses.
